MA Students Share Research in December Poster Session
As part of the GLBL700 “Introduction to Theories and Methods in Global Studies” course taught by Professor Betsy Olson, the members of our newest cohort of MA students designed research posters describing their areas of interest and early ideas for their research projects. Students discussed their work with Global Studies joint and affiliate faculty over coffee at a December 3 poster session in Carolina Hall.

The Demands of Recognition
(Stanford University Press)
Townsend Middleton’s The Demands of Recognition offers a compelling look at the escalating politics of tribal recognition in India. At once ethnographic and historical, it chronicles how multicultural governance has motivated the people of Darjeeling to ethnologically redefine themselves—from Gorkha to tribal and back. But as these communities now know, not all forms of difference are legible in the eyes of the state. The Gorkhas’ search for recognition has only amplified these communities’ anxieties about who they are—and who they must be—if they are to attain the rights, autonomy, and belonging they desire.

From one such analysis comes this interesting study of the vocabulary, syntactic constructs, and grammatical rules of a place removed from the strong linguistic globalization over the past century enhanced by mass media.
Divorce: A Love Story

What does happily ever after look like when your love story begins with divorce? In this one-of-a-kind joint memoir, Jonathan Weiler and Anne Menkens tell the story of how their relationship continued to evolve and how they co-parented their daughter once they decided their marriage was no longer working. With honesty and humor, Jonathan and Anne explain how they worked through the struggles that accompany a failed romance in order to be the kinds of parents, separately and together, that they knew their daughter needed. Divorce: A Love Story, combines an in-depth account of the dynamics of Jonathan and Anne’s relationship, the therapy process that led them to break up and the partnership they formed after their marriage ended. Their story shows that divorce need not prevent loving, committed parents from working together to make sure their children receive the love, support and positive family environment every child needs.Great Turnout for Our First Alumni Google Hangout!
Twenty-two undergraduates attended the November 10 Google Hangout with Global Studies alumni. Organized by Zach Ward, Student Services Specialist, the event gave students an opportunity to hear from three Global Studies alumni who pursued different paths after Carolina but all encouraged the undergraduates to be data/statistics literate, develop strong interpersonal skills, embrace new ways of approaching phenomena, and build intentional relationships.

MA in Global Studies
Desire to be a global leader? Want to better understand global change? Our Global Studies MA program may be just what you need to fulfill your life or career goals!
The Global Studies MA is a two-year interdisciplinary “applied research” degree that combines scholarly rigor and practical skills. Students enrolled in the program will focus on analysis of trans-regional and trans-national themes, events, and processes that affect states and societies around the world. Global Studies is an emerging discipline, and UNC-Chapel Hill is at the forefront of defining the field and evolving methodological approaches.
To learn more about our program and how to apply for the Fall 2016 semester, visit our Admissions page. The admissions deadline for applicants who wish to be considered for fellowship and assistantship opportunities is December 15, 2015. The deadline for Fall 2016 admissions is February 9, 2016.
Study Abroad Announces Two Boyatt Award Winners
Abby Elizabeth Bell, a junior from Cary, North Carolina, will be traveling to Quito, Ecuador to take classes in Spanish and explore possible topics for graduate research. Studying abroad in Quito and knowing a second language will move her closer to her goal of working for the Department of State.
Junior Paige Hines, a double major in Global Studies and Romance Languages, is this year’s other recipient.
The Michael L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Awards in Global Studies were created to enable meritorious Global Studies majors to pursue study abroad and foreign language facility pertinent to their areas of interest.
2015 Undergraduate Internship Grant Recipients

Welcome Back, Professor Vachudova
After spending spring semester on leave, supported by a fellowship to focus on her current work on Democratization in the Western Balkans, Milada Anna Vachudova has resumed her role as chair of the Curriculum in Global Studies.
