Dave Mullaney ’05

Dave Mullaney ’05 graduated from UNC with a double major in Economics and International Studies and completed a Master of International Affairs at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs in 2010.

Dave currently works at the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), a Colorado-based research and consulting organization focused on cost-effective measures to increase energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy. At RMI, Dave has worked on studies to quantify potential for energy use and carbon emission reductions through technically mature, cost-effective measures for the Chinese economy through 2050. He is also working with the government of the city of Shenzhen and several Chinese partners to improve energy efficiency of freight transportation in Shenzhen.

Experiences as an International Studies student notably helped shape Dave’s interest in and study of China. As he stated:

“UNC was the beginning of my engagement with China. I took my first Mandarin class during my first semester of sophomore year and kept on studying it through graduation and then again in grad school. Also my first trips to China were on two UNC Study Abroad programs in Beijing. It was a great way to get to know the country and the culture as well as to begin to learn how to engage professionally with people in an unfamiliar cultural context.”

Dave currently resides in Snowmass, Colorado with his wife and two sons.
