Emilie Bruchon ’97
Emilie Bruchon earned a BA in French and International Studies from UNC – Chapel Hill. She then went on to earn her Master’s in International Affairs from George Washington University.
Originally from Piedmont, Emilie’s UNC education broadened her horizon far beyond the scope of her small hometown. Her first international flight was when she left for a year of study abroad in Montpellier, France.
The multidisciplinary curriculum Emilie pursued at UNC piqued her curiosity about many aspects of international relations and foreign cultures, which naturally led her to the diplomatic corps. Emilie has now served in the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer for twelve years at a variety of international postings including Paris, Bangkok, and Oslo as well as in Washington working on the Balkans and global public diplomacy.
Over the course of her career, Emilie has had the opportunity to live and work in various countries as an official representative of the United States, and she has helped to set and operationalize U.S. foreign policy through connections with foreign publics via media and cultural exchange programs.
Currently, Emilie is in full-time Russian language training in preparation for her next assignment, which will be in Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. She remains interested in greater involvement with the Global Studies program and has spoken with participants in the UNC Washington Seminar in the past.
Among her other post-graduate accomplishments, Emilie completed a Presidential Management Fellowship at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and became a one-day Jeopardy! champion.
