Arne Kalleberg, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been appointed to a two-year term as chair of the Curriculum in Global Studies beginning July 1, 2019.  During his term, Kalleberg will work to review curricular changes, assess the needs of the unit’s degree programs and explore resources for the future leadership of Global Studies.

Message from the Chair, Arne Kalleberg

I am excited to start my term as the Chair of the Curriculum in Global Studies.  Global Studies is one of the most popular undergraduate majors in the UNC College of Arts and Sciences, and its master’s program has made great strides since it welcomed the first cohort of MA students in August 2014.  I look forward to building on Global Studies’ accomplishments and helping it meet the challenges for global education presented by the rapid changes in both the world and in higher education.

My enthusiasm stems largely from the opportunities that are now presented at UNC for global education that have resulted from the appointment of a dynamic Chief International Officer, Ambassador Barbara Stephenson.  Global Studies is well positioned to take advantage of these opportunities, thanks to the momentum that Milada Vachudova helped establish during her five years as the Chair of Global Studies, and to the excellent faculty (Carmen Huerta-Bapat, Erica Johnson, Michal Osterweil and Jonathan Weiler) and the terrific staff members (Diana Devereaux and Zach Ward) that make the Curriculum work so well.

During the next two years, Global Studies will be working to implement recommendations made by a panel of experts on global education who recently reviewed the Curriculum in Global Studies.  For example, we are evaluating whether and how to implement a second required core course in the undergraduate curriculum as well as developing ways to help faculty in other departments at UNC to add more international content to their courses.  Global Studies will also be actively involved in helping UNC implement its “Global Guarantee” to give all students the opportunity for exposure to global experiences and ideas.  In addition, we will seek to involve the many faculty at UNC who teach and do research on global issues more in the activities of Global Studies.

During the next two years, Global Studies will also promote the theme of “Climate Change and the Future of Work.” This thematic initiative is an opportunity not only to pursue a timely issue, but to do so in a way that will yield distinctive learning opportunities for CGS students and faculty. Such an opportunity may take shape in the form of a distinctive seminar or a small cluster of classes, or some other teaching collaboration.

At a time when the rise of nationalism is leading many countries (including the United States) to focus narrowly on their own interests—often to the detriment of the interests of other peoples of the world—global studies is more important than ever.  UNC has recognized this as it seeks to enhance its reputation as a major global public research university.  The Curriculum in Global Studies is central to achieving this goal, and I am delighted to be a part of it!  I look forward to working with you to promote global education!
