Who Wants to Be a Volunteer? The Ethics of Going Abroad with Dr. Michal Osterweil

Join Dr. Michal Osterweil and the Campus Y Global Circle to discuss whether we should work abroad, and the inherent power dynamics that are at play when we go abroad. A focus of her time will be on how race and the white saviour complex affect our work.

Dr. Osterweil is a lecturer and the director of internships in UNC-CH’s Curriculum in Global Studies; she serves as the Faculty Adviser for Global Programming at the Campus Y, the University’s center for social justice. Dr. Osterweil is involved in various forms of activism locally and globally; she’s spent time working with social movements in Latin America, Europe, and the US. Her academic and activist work is dedicated to creating tools and visions for social change able to address the tremendous social, political, and economic ills of our day.
