Tournées Film Festival: ‘Timbuktu’ (France, 2014)
February 18, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
FreeThis film screening is presented as part of the Tournées Film Festival, sponsored by the Department of Romance Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Based on the 2012 jihadist siege of the titular city in Mali, Timbuktu shows a ragtag band of Islamic fundamentalists announcing their increasingly absurd list of prohibitions – no sports, no music, no socializing – to Timbuktu’s denizens, several of whom refuse to follow these strictures, no matter the consequence.
All movie screenings in the festival will take place in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium of the FedEx Global Education Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the movie begins at 6:30 p.m. These screenings are free and open to the public. All films will be shown in French with English subtitles.
The festival is co-sponsored by the Center for European Studies and the Department of Asian Studies.
