The Journey of Vaan Nguyen – 2015/2016 Asian Film Series
February 8, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pmFree
The Department of Asian Studies, the Carolina Asia Center, and the Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilizations present The Journey of Vaan Nguyen (Ha-Masa shel Van) by Duki Dror (2005 / 84 min.) as part of the Transnational Connection of Language and Culture 2015–2016 Asian Film Series. This is a Hebrew/Vietnamese film set in Israel and Vietnam. Hoiami Nguyen, Vaan Nguyen’s father, was one of many “boat people” who fled Vietnam in 1975 and found asylum in Israel as part of the international effort to save Vietnamese refugees. Now, the Nguyens have decided to return to Vietnam and reclaim their confiscated land. Their journey becomes a parable on the loss of identity and the fate of refugees.
The receptions will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the films will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the FedEx Global Education Center. All films will be shown with English subtitles, and there will be free parking.
