Rival Power: Russia in Southeast Europe, Round Table Discussion

October 23, 2017 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Join the Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies for a book discussion to mark the publication of Dimitar Bechev’s monograph Rival Power: Russia in Southeast Europe. Participants include Graeme Robertson, a professor in the Department of Political Science; Robert Jenkins, an associate professor in the Department of Political Science; and Bechev, a fellow of the Center.

Is Russia threatening to disrupt more than two decades’ of E.U. and U.S. efforts to promote stability in post-communist Southeast Europe? Deftly unpacking the nature and extent of Russian influence in the Balkans, Greece and Turkey, Bechev argues that all sides are driven by pragmatism and opportunism rather than historical loyalties.

This event is free and open to the public, but space is limited and RSVP is required. Lunch will be provided to registrants. Please respond by Tuesday, October 24. This event is part of the newly launched Forum on Southeast Europe, supported by the Center for Global Initiatives and the Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
