Public Lecture: “Being Muslim: A Cultural History of Women of Color in American Islam” by Dr. Sylvia Chan-Malik

April 24, 2018 @ 5:00 pm

Dr. Sylvia Chan-Malik (Rutgers University) will be speaking at UNC on April 24th at 5 PM at the Global Education Center (room 1009) on her soon to be published book, Being Muslim: A Cultural History of Women of Color in American Islam. This work explores twentieth and twenty-first century U.S. Muslim womanhood by centering the lived experiences of women of color, mapping how communities of American Islam became sites of safety, support, spirituality, and social activism, and how women of color were central to their formation. Dr. Chan-Malik’s lecture will focus on the diversity and similarities of Black, Arab, South Asian, Latina, and multiracial Muslim women, and how American understandings of Islam have shifted against the evolution of U.S. white nationalism over the past century. Please email Samah Choudhury (samah@unc.edu) with any questions.
