Peace Film Series: “The Price of Sex” (US, 2011)
March 10, 2016 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
FreeThe Price of Sex is a feature-length documentary about young Eastern European women who’ve been drawn into a netherworld of sex trafficking and abuse. Intimate, harrowing and revealing, it is a story told by the young women who were supposed to be silenced by shame, fear and violence. Photojournalist Mimi Chakarova, who grew up in Bulgaria, takes us on a personal investigative journey, exposing the shadowy world of sex trafficking from Eastern Europe to the Middle East and Western Europe. Filming undercover and gaining extraordinary access, Chakarova illuminates how even though some women escape to tell their stories, sex trafficking thrives.
Following the screening of the film, there will be a short discussion session with Rotary Peace Fellow, Cristina Andoni. In 2003, Andoni joined Chakarova as a translator when she started her documentary photography project on sex trafficking in Moldova. This experience turned into eight years of collaboration and the project transitioned from photography to filmography. During these years she assisted the filmmaker as a fixer and research assistant in Moldova.
