“Making Public in a Privatized World: The Struggle for Essential Services in Urban Africa”

November 5, 2015 @ 5:00 pm - 6:15 pm

A public lecture by Dr. David McDonald, Professor of Global Studies at Queen’s University, Canada.

“After three decades of privatization, the world is witnessing a dramatic return to public services. From the remunicipalization of water in Argentina, to community-based health monitoring in India, to the democratization of electricity provision in Tunisia, there has been a tidal wave of innovative (if sometimes contradictory) forms of ‘making public’.

This talk reviews global trends and discusses how – and if – public services are being remade in cities in sub-Saharan Africa, where the trend has been slower to take off, where resistance to democratized forms of service governance have been strong, and where the challenges of infrastructure deficits are enormous. What lessons are to be learned from Asia and Latin America in this regard, and how might African social movements build a strong urban pro-public movement?
