Islamization in the Golden Horde and Communal Identity among the Turkmens: The Subtle Social Legacies of a Fourteenth-Century Saint

Join Dr. Devin DeWeese from Indiana University Bloomington for a talk about the religious history of Islamic Central and Inner Asia. Dr. DeWeese is a renowned scholar who studies problems of Islamization and the social and political roles of Sufi communities. His first book Islamization and Native Religion in the Golden Horde: Baba T√ľkles and Conversion to Islam in Historical and Epic Tradition received the 1995 MESA Hourani Book Award. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2003 and was named a Carnegie Scholar in 2006.
