November 17: Sanctuary from the Border to the Classroom 

• This session will offer a brief overview of the root causes of Latin American migration, U.S. and Mexican border policy, and how race, indigeneity, and gender share migratory journeys. Debunking some common misconceptions about immigrants, it will also review local and digital resources and discuss how classrooms can become sanctuary spaces. 

November 18: Arts, Advocacy, & Africanist Action: Locally-Led Human Rights Organizing in East Africa 

• This session will provide examples from education and community-building consultant Marie Garlock’s work in narrative- and arts- leadership regarding ethics and equity in programs in Malawi, Kenya, and Tanzania. 

November 19: Social Justice in China 

•  Who determines social justice for whom? Examining issues surrounding economic development in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China from 2009 to present, this talk will delve into different perspectives and approaches to social justice. This talk will be accompanied by a short demonstration of incorporating historical sources in grade 10-12 social science curriculum to teach students critical thinking through analysis of competing viewpoints.  

November 20: Social Justice through the Arts: Social Justice through the Arts: Reimagining the Berlin Wall 

•  This session will offer a brief overview of how protest and the arts intersect in contemporary Europe. Then, participants will be tasked with creating their own “protest art.” In honor of 30 years of German Reunification, we will use the Berlin Wall as a template.
