Cecilia Martinez-Gallardo: “The Challenges to Democracy in Latin America’”
March 30, 2016 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
$18From the Monroe Doctrine to the Good Neighbor Policy, politics in Latin America have been too often defined in terms of U.S. interests and resistance to them. At the end of the Cold War, the U.S. had fewer pretexts for intervention in regional governments and political processes, and Latin America saw a marked increase in democratically-elected leaders. Cecilia Martinez-Gallardo will evaluate the prospects for democracy in the region and cover some of the main challenges to its consolidation, including economic crisis, violence and corruption.
