Antoaneta Dimitrova is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Public Administration, Leiden University.

What do EU citizens think about the European Union’s enlargement? Thirteen member states from Central, Eastern and Southern Europe have joined the EU in the last two decades, after a period of complex negotiations and intensive preparation by the candidate states and the Union. But what do citizens think about this momentous change in the scope of the Union? Has Europe—the EU—really been united in the eyes of the citizens of the different member states? How did citizens perceive enlargement and what do they think of future enlargements: be they with Turkey, Serbia or Montenegro?severing bank-state ties, but at the expense of national economic sovereignty.
