Annual Mapathon Event

November 15, 2016 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

When disaster strikes, responders have to get there fast. Yet, no accurate maps exist for large parts of the world.

On Nov. 15, volunteers will fill in critical gaps as part of a Humanitarian Mapathon in the Davis Library Research Hub, second floor, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The effort will support the Measles & Rubella Initiative in Humanitarian OpenStreetMap, a crowd-sourced effort to create and provide maps to assist in humanitarian and crisis relief.

OpenStreetMap is a free data set that anyone can contribute to. Mapathon participants will review satellite imagery of a crisis zone and add features such as roads and buildings to OpenStreetMap. This event is student-led and no mapping experience is needed. The event will begin with a tutorial at 5 p.m. Bring a laptop computer if you have one. If you have any questions, contact Juliana Ritter at jdritter@live.unc.edu.
