GLBL 383 Global Whiteness (Mark Driscoll)
A look at race as a theory and practice as it has been constructed in academic disciplines, popular culture, and social struggle. Historically we will chart the transformations from the nineteenth century to current-day post-genomic science. “Whiteness” has emerged in the last several years as an interdisciplinary arena of academic inquiry drawing from the fields of critical race studies, cultural studies, Empire studies and international politics to focus on the historical, cultural and political aspects of people phenotypically understood in difference as white.
GLBL 486 Sports and Globalization (Jonathan Weiler)
This course explores some of the many interesting relationships between sports and globalization. We will begin by looking at the emergence of modern sporting cultures globally as an outgrowth of the industrial revolution and the influence, imperial and otherwise, of British and later American cultural norms. We will use sports to look at themes of race, poverty, gender, nationalism and other issues related to tensions around globalization. We will also examine major events like the Olympics, World Cup and the global spread of particular sports, notably soccer and baseball. Our goal will be to delve into sports both as important social and cultural practices in and of themselves and also to better understand some of the larger social, cultural and political forces shaping globalization.
