Alison Tomas (MA ’17) is currently working as a Governance and Economic Development Program Associate at RTI International in RTP after graduating from the REEES concentration of our MA program. During her time at UNC, Alison received a FLAS Fellowship to fund the study of less commonly taught languages and area studies coursework. This program provides academic year and summer fellowships to assist graduate students and advanced undergraduates in foreign language and area studies. The goals of the fellowship program include assisting in the development of knowledge, resources and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area/international studies; stimulating the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency; and to develop a pool of international experts to meet national needs.  She also worked at UNC’s Population Center on the MEASURE Evaluation Project as a field operations assistant.

Of her experience and time in the Global Studies MA program here at UNC, Alison offered the following reflections:

“This program helped provide me with both direction and a stronger skill set to pursue international development technical work in the areas of governance, security and economic development. It also provided me with language skills that have proven to be an asset in finding a job!”
